Rings and adapters for robotics

  • Client:

    Somatic

  • Model:

Adapter bracket with an integrated captive nut (the nut can rotate freely but does not fall out, printed in one piece without assembly)

  • Mass:

    9.45 g and 18.28 g

Somatic is a company specializing in the development and manufacturing of autonomous cleaning robots for commercial spaces. Their solutions combine advanced software and functional hardware components, creating highly efficient and flexible platforms for automation.

Customer’s problem

The Somatic team needed to quickly obtain parts for the internal components of their robots — specifically, parts with complex geometries and sufficient strength that had to fit perfectly into the overall design. They required high-quality components with tight dimensional tolerances and chemical resistance, which could be ensured by using PA12 material and MJF technology.

Problem Solution

The Makerly team, together with Somatic, discussed the key requirements for the part and evaluated the 3D model. It was decided to use PA12 nylon powder for printing, as the material combines high strength, dimensional stability, and optimal weight for the finished part, while also offering excellent chemical resistance and ease of post-processing.

During printing, a high-quality surface finish was achieved, which was then treated with sandblasting to remove residual powder and improve the appearance of the part.

«We turned to Makerly to find the optimal solution for manufacturing and prototyping parts for our robots. Thanks to their expertise and Multi Jet Fusion technology, we received high-quality components that fit perfectly into our design and allowed us to improve the robot without unnecessary delays»

Result

Within 10 days, five sets of adapter brackets and parts for the new prototype were printed, each weighing approximately 9.45 g and 18.28 g respectively. According to internal Multi Jet Fusion standards, the parts remained within acceptable tolerance limits and met the required physical and mechanical parameters. As a result, Somatic received high-precision components without delays or budget overruns.

*The assessment of the cost and feasibility of metal printing is based on several factors — not only the weight (volume) of the part, but also its geometry, the complexity of post-processing, and other technological parameters. Therefore, the preparation of the estimate may take longer than the usual 30–60 minutes, extending to several hours or even up to two working days. In addition, since the production facility is located outside Ukraine, it is important to consider all relevant logistics factors.
