Sandblasting of 3D Parts - Makerly

Sandblasting of 3D Parts

Sandblasting is a standard preparation stage for parts printed using Multi Jet Fusion technology. It provides mechanical matting and surface cleaning, evenly removes residual powder, reduces roughness, and smooths micro-irregularities. As a result, the parts become pleasantly smooth to the touch and visually neat.

The process of sandblasting creates an optimal surface for subsequent stages such as painting, varnishing, or applying other decorative and protective coatings, while also ensuring that the finished products have a professional appearance.

Sandblasting Process

After the MJF printing is completed, the parts undergo a standard post-processing stage — sandblasting. This ensures a clean, uniform, and prepared surface for the next technological steps. Below is how we achieve a perfect surface before further processing.

1. Receiving and Initial Cleaning

Immediately after printing, the parts are removed from the build chamber and cleared of the main excess powder. We inspect the model, carefully clean key areas, and prepare it for abrasive treatment.

2. Sandblasting

The parts are treated with a directed stream of abrasive material that removes remaining powder and smooths the surface.

As a result, the product gains a uniform matte texture, feels pleasant to the touch, and appears visually clean.

3. Final Cleaning and Quality Control

After sandblasting, we blow the part again and clean it of any dust.

We check the uniformity of the texture and the quality of the surface — the product is then ready for painting or immediate use.

After sandblasting, the parts obtain a clean, prepared base surface — and this is where many manufacturers stop. But if you need a finished product rather than just a printed part, the next step is professional painting.

This is the ideal solution for those who value:
  • perfect appearance — without the characteristic roughness of MJF printing
  • resistance to scratches and chemicals — the parts maintain their look even under heavy use
  • precise brand color — shades can be matched using RAL or another color code
  • UV protection — the products do not fade or lose color over time
  • finish flexibility — matte, satin, or gloss, as well as markings and graphic elements

We use industrial polyurethane, epoxy, and acrylic coating systems to ensure that production, prototype, and end-use parts look premium, durable, and market-ready — regardless of batch size.

FAQ

  • Why is sandblasting needed after MJF printing?

To remove residual powder, smooth the surface, and improve appearance. It is also an essential step before painting to ensure better coating adhesion.

  • Do the dimensions of the part change after sandblasting?

The impact is minimal — only a micron-thin layer is removed. Geometry and dimensions remain unchanged.

  • Can I order only sandblasting without painting?

Sandblasting is part of the standard post-processing workflow and is performed by default for all orders.

  • What does the part look like after processing?

The surface becomes uniformly matte, smooth to the touch, and free of powder residue. It is a premium texture suitable for both demonstration and serial-production parts.

*The assessment of the cost and feasibility of metal printing is based on several factors — not only the weight (volume) of the part, but also its geometry, the complexity of post-processing, and other technological parameters. Therefore, the preparation of the estimate may take longer than the usual 30–60 minutes, extending to several hours or even up to two working days. In addition, since the production facility is located outside Ukraine, it is important to consider all relevant logistics factors.
